Google introduced their new feature in organic search called Google +1. The way that it works is that if you search for something that shows up in the organic search listings, it will give you the opportunity to click the +1 button if you found it relevant and liked what the website had to offer. Think of it as the Facebook “like” button of Google.
Many experts believe this could have a significant impact on Google’s search algorithm, although most are unsure if it will be a success. Because relevance is the most important aspect of search, Google is doing whatever it can to make sure the right websites show up for the right keyword string; so why not let the users tell Google what is relevant?
Nobody knows if this will work or how big of a factor it will play in organic search, but think about the implications for a second. Because a particular website may have a bigger network and more resources than a smaller business website, it would almost undoubtedly get more +1 clicks than the small website, regardless of whether or not it was a relevant website. It almost seems like a rigged game from the get-go because of this notion.
On the other hand, websites with great content relevant to the keyword string of a searcher will get natural +1 clicks. The idea behind the Google +1 button is to get webmasters to place more importance on developing content for people rather than strictly for search engines; which is something SEO experts have focused on in the last few years.
Google +1 is in Beta version at this point in time, but consider following it closely because it may be a contributing factor to organic search in the years to come if it catches on.
